Take a look at the sculptures featured in the rotating exhibition of sculptures this year. In early spring, a request for proposals was posted to build a pool of sculptures to select from. A small volunteer selection committee reviewed the proposals and selected the sculptures seen below. Each artist received a stipend for the season.

Fire: Sea Spirit
$5,000
Stainless Steel
2016
All my artwork is inspired by what the natural environment has to say to me over many years of observation and creating art in many forms. I want the viewer to see in a new light or way thinking that they might not always see in this constantly changing world. Each piece has its own unique story. “Fire: Sea Spirit” is an abstract stainless steel sculpture that was inspired from forest/prairie fires and sea fish, such as dolphins or large fish surfacing out of the water. I wanted to combine the two movement energies created from these two very different forms from nature. It is about upwards movement in a simple clean beautiful form. It is about imbalance, flow and an unknown spirit of the moment.

Greeting Tower
NFS
Steel
2020
“Greeting Tower” is a vertical sculpture made of steel and stainless steel plates. The sculpture’s shiny reflective column is filled with 320 small triangle plates that are welded together and form a texture. This method is similar to quilting in that small pieces are joined together to cover a larger area. This motif is inspired by sunlight reflecting on undulating water. The shape and concept are inspired by ancient totem poles of various cultures. Totem poles are erected in public places to serve as symbols of ideas. Totem poles serve several purposes, one of which is to greet and welcome visitors. The sculpture conveys this idea and is meant to actively engage the viewers.
About the Artist – Sung-Hee Min
Min grew up in rural South Korea where agriculture was the main livelihood at the time. Rice fields were everywhere and she loved seeing the farmers planting rice seedlings in the fields early spring. Walking along the rice fields to school and seeing the fields changing colors from light green to golden yellow is a fond memory. Another of her favorite childhood memory is her father once taking her to the construction site of the house she grew up in, in the late 1970s. As was customary in Korea at the time, a brief ceremony was held at the site marking the completion of the main framework. The skeletal lumber structure which was suggestive of the house to be was a fascinating sight to her and left a lasting impression. Oftentimes, she revisits this memory when she creates her work in the studio.

Cement, Mixed Media
2020
Jones’ sculptures explore the complex interplay between the female form, societal politeness, manners, and morals of past eras. By using cement and found objects, she aims to create a raw and textured surface that embodies the gritty reality of the past while simultaneously reflecting the beauty and grace of the female form. Through her work, she seeks to challenge the viewer’s perceptions of femininity and the societal expectations placed upon women throughout history. Ultimately, her sculptures serve as a visual commentary on the ways in which our past has shaped the present and the ongoing struggles of women to break free from gendered constraints.

About the Artist – Dan Perry
The imagery in Dan Perry’s work is an amalgamation of the familiar and the abstract composed in ways that tell a story to which the viewer becomes a witness – part of a scene; a moment suspended in time. He draws inspiration from natural, architectural and mechanical objects while utilizing vibrant color to accentuate forms and spaces. Shifts in scale and perspective challenge the viewer to question their physical relationship to the world around them and contemplate their surroundings. He believes in form, invention, and objects well made.
